URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) — The City of Urbana is seeking applicants to fill the Ward 5 City Council seat vacated by Council Member Chaundra Bishop, who resigned on April 28.

Mayor DeShawn Williams has up to 60 days from the date of resignation to recommend an appointment, and the City Council must vote on that appointment within 30 days. The appointee will serve until the next general election in 2027.

“Chaundra Bishop has been a dedicated advocate for Ward 5 and a valued member of the Urbana City Council,” Mayor Williams said. “Her service to our community has reflected a deep commitment to residents, thoughtful leadership, and a genuine care for the future of Urbana.”

To be eligible, applicants must be eligible to vote in municipal elections, have resided in Ward 5 for at least one year prior to appointment, have no delinquent taxes or fees owed to the city, and have no felony convictions in any U.S. court. Applicants must also be available to attend City Council meetings every Monday evening.

Applications are available online at go.urbanail.gov/ApplyWard5, at the City Clerk’s Office, or at the Urbana Free Library. Completed applications can be submitted online to CityClerk@UrbanaIL.gov or in person at 400 South Vine Street.

The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3.
