Teen hospitalized after overnight shooting in Urbana

URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) — A 17-year-old boy was hospitalized early Saturday morning following a shooting in Urbana that police say involved as many as 20 gunshots.

According to the Urbana Police Department, officers were dispatched around 12:45 a.m. Saturday to the 800 block of East Kerr Avenue after reports of multiple gunshots in the area.

When officers arrived, they found evidence of a shooting, including multiple shell casings. Police also reported damage to several vehicles and an apartment building believed to be connected to the incident.

Shortly after officers arrived, a 17-year-old male from Champaign arrived at Carle Health with a gunshot wound tied to the shooting. Police said the teen was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses told investigators a dark gray SUV was seen leaving the apartment complex at a high rate of speed immediately after the shots were fired.

Police are asking residents in the area to check surveillance or doorbell camera footage from around the time of the shooting and report any suspicious vehicles or activity.

Detectives are also working to determine why the victim was in the area during the early morning hours.
