Sports leaders discuss NIL, sport tourism and the future of athletics at University of Illinois panel

CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — Leaders from across the sports industry gathered at the University of Illinois for a panel discussion exploring the changing landscape of college athletics, sports entertainment and community impact.

Fighting Illini Athletic Director Josh Whitman delivered remarks during the event, which brought together executives, academics and sports leaders to discuss topics ranging from name, image and likeness policies to sport tourism and career development in the industry.

The event featured multiple panels throughout the morning.

A session titled “The Contemporary NIL Landscape: Governance, Markets and Athlete Empowerment” included speakers Mark Steinberg of Excel Sports and University of Illinois professor Michael LeRoy, with Andrew McCarthy of TSMGI serving as moderator. The discussion focused on the evolving role of NIL policies and how they are reshaping college athletics and athlete opportunities.

Another panel, “Beyond Economic Impact: Sport Tourism, Public Good and Civic Stewardship,” explored the role sports organizations play in community development. Speakers included Glenn Eden, a corporate affairs strategist and civic leader, and Joe Kennedy, director of athletics and sports leadership at the Obama Foundation, with Dr. Yannik Kluch moderating.

A session titled “From Tee Times to Prime Time: Engineering the Next Era of Sports Entertainment” examined innovation and business growth in sports. Speakers included Chris Marciani of TMRW Sports, Mark Steinberg of Excel Sports, and Jordan Bressler, president and CEO of TSMGI.

Other discussions focused on sports marketing and career development in the industry.

The panel “Marketing with a Mission: Altruism, Community and Brand Trust” included Brian Floriani, founder of Bernie’s Book Bank, and Joe Ronovsky, chief business affairs officer for Bedford Park.

The event concluded with “The Long Game: Career Strategy in a Short-Term World,” moderated by Carmen Rossi, founder of 8 Hospitality. Panelists included Tristan Nelson of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Lauren Mroz of the National Basketball Association, and Christine Stromberg of the United States Tennis Association.

Organizers said the discussions were designed to give students, professionals and community members insight into the rapidly evolving sports industry and the broader role athletics play in society.
