CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The Salvation Army of Champaign County has extended its teen hygiene kit distribution event by one day in hopes of serving more students heading back to school later this month.
The program’s goal is to help boost the confidence and care of 500 teens by distributing hygiene essentials, which are often missing from school supply lists. The organization will continue distributing the kits on Friday, August 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army Red Shield Center at 2212 North Market Street in Champaign.
This is the local Salvation Army’s first time doing a hygiene kit distribution, organized in response to an often-overlooked need. Back-to-school costs increase financial stress for vulnerable families who are already struggling to afford housing, food, and utilities. The kits are made possible thanks to the support of community donations and volunteers.
Examples of hygiene items included in the kit include hair care products, body wash, toothpaste and toothbrushes, and deodorant. There are also supplemental products that may be chosen, such as feminine hygiene products, loofahs, soap wet wipes, body lotion, and chapstick. All supplies are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
To be eligible, students must be enrolled in a Champaign County high school. Families must bring either a student ID or a copy of enrollment paperwork or a confirmation email to receive a kit.
