CHAMPAIGN, IL — In an effort to support local teens heading back to school, The Salvation Army of Champaign County has added an additional day to its teen hygiene kit distribution event. The organization hopes to serve up to 500 high school students by providing essentials often missing from school supply lists — hygiene products.

The next distribution will take place on Friday, August 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Salvation Army Red Shield Center, located at 2212 N. Market St., Champaign.

This marks the first hygiene kit distribution organized by the local Salvation Army, developed in response to an often-overlooked back-to-school need. While notebooks and backpacks are top of mind for most families, the rising costs of personal care items can pose a serious challenge for households already struggling to afford basic necessities like rent, food, and utilities.

“Confidence and personal care are a critical part of student success,” said organizers. “We want teens to walk into school feeling ready — not just with supplies, but with dignity.”

The pre-packaged kits include items such as shampoo, body wash, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. Students can also choose from optional items like feminine hygiene products, wet wipes, loofahs, body lotion, and Chapstick — all available while supplies last.

To be eligible, students must be enrolled in a Champaign County high school. Families are asked to bring a student ID, enrollment paperwork, or a confirmation email to verify eligibility.

The event is made possible through community donations and volunteers, who have stepped up to fill a gap for families in need as the school year begins.

For the past 14 weeks and counting, the top Billboard spot has been held by a love ballad: Alex Warren's "Ordinary." As Berklee College of Music professor and forensic musicologist Joe Bennett notes, the February release is "a fair bit slower than the mean average for the Hot 100, or for a historical song of the summer."
