RANTOUL, IL (Chambana Today) — A sport inspired by the fictional game of Quidditch will take center stage March 7–8 as a national Quadball Qualifier returns to Rantoul.
Nineteen college and adult club teams from across the country will compete at the Rantoul Family Sports Complex for spots in the 2026 national championship tournament. The event is sanctioned by US Quadball, the sport’s national governing body.
Quadball is a mixed-gender, full-contact sport played by hundreds of teams worldwide. Originally adapted from the game of Quidditch featured in the Harry Potter series, the sport combines elements of rugby, dodgeball and flag football. Players compete with a broom held between their legs while passing, catching and tackling in fast-paced play.
The sport officially changed its name from quidditch to quadball in 2022 to create new sponsorship opportunities and distance itself from the Harry Potter brand. The name “quadball” references the number of balls and positions used in the game.
Mark Brown of Experience Champaign-Urbana said the community is excited to host the qualifier for a second time, noting it provides opportunities to grow the sport locally.
Organizers estimate the tournament will generate more than $300,000 in economic impact, with more than 350 athletes expected to travel to the area and stay in local hotels.
Games begin at 8 a.m. both days at the sports complex, 744 Murray Road. Spectators are encouraged to attend and bring their own chairs for sideline viewing.
