CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — The Illinois Department of Transportation has launched a new online dashboard that gives the public an inside look at how the state responds to winter weather.

The dashboard, available on the agency’s website, provides up-to-date statistics on salt usage, materials and labor hours used to keep roads safe during snow-and-ice season.

Illinois Transportation Secretary Gia Biagi said the new tool offers an easy way for residents to see how resources are being used during winter storms.

“Few things get us more attention at IDOT than the work of our exceptional snow and ice teams,” Biagi said in a statement. “The new dashboard is a quick, easy way to get you information on how the public’s resources are being put to use.”

The page will be updated regularly and also includes the latest numbers on snowplows that have been struck by other vehicles. Officials say even a minor collision requires a plow to be removed from service for inspection, leaving fewer vehicles available to clear roads.

The dashboard reinforces the department’s “Don’t Crowd the Plow” message, reminding drivers to keep a safe distance from snowplows.

The page also features a tutorial explaining the winter road conditions map on GettingAroundIllinois.com. The map relays information from plow drivers in the field through a cloud-based system to show whether IDOT-maintained roads are clear or covered with snow and ice.

Additional information on the site explains how salt and other materials are used to treat winter roads and includes videos highlighting winter operations.
