CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The U of I and consumer financial services leader Synchrony celebrated a major milestone this week: more than 400 students have gained real-world experience through Synchrony’s internship program since it launched in 2018.

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony, leaders from both institutions unveiled the newly expanded Synchrony Emerging Technology Center (ETC) at the U of I’s Research Park. The revamped 11,000-square-foot space now includes upgraded collaboration areas, flexible huddle rooms, event spaces, a remodeled café, and a locally commissioned mural honoring Illinois and the university.

The ETC serves as a year-round innovation hub where interns work with Synchrony teams on cutting-edge projects in engineering, data science, human-centered design, and more. Dozens of former interns have gone on to full-time roles with the company.

“The expansion of our Emerging Technology Center reflects the incredible talent of U. of I. students as well as the enduring strength of our partnership with the university,” said Tim Christensen, CIO of Synchrony. “Together, we’ve built a model that both enhances Synchrony’s innovation goals and provides students with opportunities to advance and grow technology skills. We are proud of the impact of this partnership and excited to grow this collaboration for years to come.”

U. of I. Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation Dr. Susan Martinis praised the collaboration, calling Synchrony a “tremendous launchpad” for students and a strong example of bridging academic research with industry.

In addition to internships, Synchrony supports student development through hackathons, Datathons, and lectures on cutting-edge topics like AI and credit modeling. The effort is part of Synchrony’s broader commitment to expanding educational and financial mobility opportunities across the U.S.
