CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Thousands of Champaign County residents lost power Monday afternoon after a downed wire caused multiple outages across the area.

According to Ameren Illinois, around 5,899 customers were affected by the outages, which began around 2:45 p.m. By 3:45 p.m., service had not yet been restored, but utility crews were on-site assessing the situation.

A spokesperson for Ameren told WCIA that repairs were underway and power was expected to be restored within approximately two hours. The utility company is urging the public to stay away from any downed lines and report them immediately.

No injuries or major incidents related to the outage have been reported so far. Updates will be shared as restoration continues.
