CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — Millions of residents across Illinois and the greater Midwest are under an elevated threat of dangerous, long-track tornadoes today and into tonight, according to the American Red Cross.

Severe thunderstorms capable of producing flash flooding, damaging winds, large hail, and potentially intense tornadoes are expected across the Central Plains and Midwest. Illinois remains in the high-risk zone along with neighboring states including Missouri, Indiana, and Kentucky.

The Red Cross is closely monitoring conditions and has disaster teams on standby to respond if needed. Officials advise residents to identify safe locations, such as basements or small interior rooms with no windows, and to avoid mobile homes, RVs, and trailers during storms.

“Stay informed about potential thunderstorms and tornadoes by monitoring local weather reports and signing up for free emergency alerts from your local government,” said Mara Thompson, regional communications manager for the American Red Cross of Illinois. “If a tornado warning is issued, move to your safe place immediately and protect your head and neck.”

The Red Cross also provides safety tips for flooding. Residents are urged not to walk, swim, or drive through moving water and to follow official evacuation routes.

For real-time alerts, guidance in English and Spanish, and shelter information, residents are encouraged to download the free Red Cross Emergency app.
