Champaign, Ill. (Chambana Today) — A 37-year-old Mahomet man was killed Saturday evening following a single-vehicle motorcycle crash in northwest Champaign, authorities confirmed.

The Champaign County Coroner, Laurie Brauer, identified the victim as Matthew A. Mayberry. He was transported to Carle Foundation Hospital with critical injuries and was pronounced dead at 8:19 p.m. following emergency treatment.

The crash occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Bloomington Road and Mattis Avenue, where police say Mayberry’s motorcycle left the roadway and struck a light pole. No other vehicles were involved.

The Champaign Police Department and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office are conducting a joint investigation into the cause of the crash. An autopsy has been scheduled.

Authorities closed parts of the intersection Saturday night to process the scene and collect evidence. Traffic resumed later that evening.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has surveillance footage from the area to contact the department at (217) 351-4545. This incident marks one of several serious motorcycle crashes in the region this summer. Officials are urging motorists to stay alert and for riders to exercise additional caution, especially during peak traffic hours.
