CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — A late-night emergency alert sent to University of Illinois students and staff warned of an armed individual near the 500 block of Green Street, prompting a swift police response and urging the public to avoid the area.

The Illini-Alert message, issued at approximately 1:50 a.m. Tuesday, April 21, reported “an armed subject with a firearm” and advised recipients to use caution and check their email for additional details. The alert triggered concern across campus, particularly in the busy Campustown district, which is typically active even during overnight hours.

University of Illinois Police responded quickly and began searching the area. Officers canvassed nearby streets and buildings, working to locate the individual described in the alert. Authorities have not publicly released a detailed description of the suspect.

After an extensive search, police reported they were unable to locate anyone matching the description of the armed subject. A second Illini-Alert was later issued informing the campus community that the individual was believed to have left the area.

University officials reminded students and residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity, and follow safety guidance during emergency alerts. The incident remains under investigation.
