SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) — The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs is recognizing June as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Month by launching public service announcements designed to raise awareness of PTSD and connect those affected with available resources.

According to the department, an estimated 12 million people in the United States are diagnosed with PTSD. Veterans face a heightened risk, particularly those who have served in combat zones or are experiencing challenges transitioning to civilian life.

State officials said the awareness campaign is intended to encourage individuals struggling with PTSD symptoms to seek support and treatment.

The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs noted that PTSD can affect both veterans and civilians, including survivors of sexual assault, serious accidents, natural disasters and other traumatic events.

Officials emphasized that effective treatments are available and can help reduce symptoms while improving quality of life.

As part of the campaign, IDVA Director Terry Prince appears in newly released public service announcements encouraging people living with PTSD to seek assistance and offering a message of hope and recovery.

The department said increasing awareness and engagement in treatment is critical to supporting veterans and others affected by trauma. Additional information about PTSD resources and services for veterans is available through the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs.
