SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) — As Memorial Day weekend kicks off the unofficial start of summer, the Illinois Liquor Control Commission is reminding residents to drink responsibly and plan ahead before celebrating.

For many Illinoisans, the holiday weekend means grilling, boating, swimming, and socializing — often with alcohol. The ILCC is urging anyone who plans to drink to know their limits, stay hydrated, and eat before and during consumption, particularly on hot days when alcohol’s effects can intensify.

Among the commission’s top recommendations: designate a sober driver, schedule a rideshare, or use public transportation before the first drink is poured. For those heading out on the water, officials are also urging boaters to designate a sober captain and wear a life jacket at all times.

Alcohol affects the entire body, slowing breathing rate, heart rate, and brain function. According to MedlinePlus, those effects can appear within 10 minutes and peak between 40 and 60 minutes after consumption — a reminder that impairment can set in faster than many people expect.

“Social drinking is common during the holidays, and more so during the summer,” said ILCC Executive Director Lisa Gardner. “Be safe, have fun, plan ahead, and always drink responsibly. The best celebrations are when everyone comes home.”

The ILCC also encourages hosts to provide plenty of non-alcoholic beverage options and to watch for signs of overconsumption among friends and family. More information is available at ilcc.illinois.gov.
