SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) — Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs has opened submissions for the 2026 Cream of the Crop Photography Contest, inviting young photographers ages 8 to 18 to capture the beauty of Illinois agriculture. Top winners will receive Bright Start college savings scholarships ranging from $250 to $1,000 and have their photographs featured in Ag Invest marketing materials, including the annual calendar and on social media.
“We’re proud to support this contest, which gives young people an opportunity to showcase their creativity while celebrating Illinois’ agricultural heritage,” said Treasurer Frerichs. “Illinois is home to a vibrant agricultural industry, and this contest invites the next generation to document what makes our farms, fields, and livestock so special.”
Participants are encouraged to submit up to two photos of any aspect of Illinois agriculture, from crops to livestock to community gardens. Whether it’s a sunset over a field, wintery livestock images with steam rising from their noses, or a snapshot of a bustling farmer’s market, Frerichs emphasizes the simplicity of entry.
“It’s easy to get involved,” Frerichs said. “All you need is a camera or smartphone, and you can capture what you love about agriculture—whether it’s your family farm, your local garden, or simply the beauty of the land around you. These photos will help showcase the best of our state and the future of Illinois agriculture.”
The Cream of the Crop contest is now in its 14th year and continues to encourage young people to engage with the world of agriculture, an industry that remains Illinois’ largest economic driver. As the contest continues to grow, Frerichs notes that more young people are entering agriculture than ever before.
“We’re seeing a strong wave of young people entering agriculture,” Frerichs said. “These students are not just the future of our farming industry; they’re helping us tell the story of agriculture through their own lens. I want them to feel empowered to show off the beauty of what’s right in front of them.”
