CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) – In observance of U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is highlighting nearly 90 Illinois hospitals for their outstanding efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance. This year, The Pavilion in Champaign is among the hospitals recognized for its dedication to using antibiotics wisely and preventing the spread of resistant bacteria and other germs.

U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week, which runs from November 18-24, encourages Illinoisans to learn about the responsible use of antibiotics and antifungals. The Pavilion in Champaign, as part of the IDPH Acute Care Antimicrobial Stewardship Honor Roll, has been commended for its commitment to best practices in antimicrobial stewardship, including leadership, accountability, expertise, and data tracking.

Dr. Sameer Vohra, IDPH Director, stressed the importance of working together to ensure antibiotics remain effective for future generations: “When antibiotics are misused, germs learn to fight back, making infections tougher to cure. This week, we are celebrating Illinois hospitals, like The Pavilion, that are leading the way in using these life-saving medicines wisely.”

The Pavilion is one of the hospitals earning a spot on the Gold level of the honor roll, awarded to hospitals that have implemented the full range of antimicrobial stewardship priorities, such as tracking antibiotic use and providing feedback to prescribers.

Governor JB Pritzker has also issued a proclamation to raise awareness about antimicrobial resistance, urging the public to understand when antibiotics are appropriate and how good hygiene practices can help prevent the spread of infections.

The full list of 2025 awardees and more information about the U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week can be found on the IDPH website.
