SPRINGFIELD, Ill, (Chambana Today) – Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) Director Jerry Costello II was recently awarded the Honorary American FFA Degree, one of the highest honors given by the National FFA Organization. The prestigious award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to agricultural education and FFA through long-term dedication and leadership.

Costello received the honor during the 98th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis on October 31, 2025. The Honorary American FFA Degree is reserved for those who go beyond everyday contributions to make a lasting difference in the lives of young agriculturists.

Mindy Bunselmeyer, Executive Director of the Illinois FFA Center, praised Costello for his ability to connect with individuals, saying, “He has a way of making every person feel seen, valued, and connected.” She highlighted his unwavering support for agricultural education and his personal commitment to FFA members and leaders.

In addition to receiving the award, Costello also presented a state proclamation from Governor JB Pritzker to Thaddeus Bergschneider, the 2024-2025 National FFA President and a Franklin, Illinois native. Costello expressed pride in Bergschneider’s leadership, noting that he is the first Illinois student in three decades to lead the national organization.

Costello’s recognition adds to his legacy in Illinois agriculture, a field he’s deeply committed to, with his grandfather having served as an FFA advisor. Since 2022, thanks to the efforts of Senator Doris Turner and the Pritzker administration, Illinois students can join FFA at no cost, significantly increasing participation in the program.
