CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — Land of Lincoln Goodwill Industries is celebrating Earth Week by highlighting major gains in sustainability, including diverting more than 11.6 million pounds of material from landfills in 2025.

The organization reported an 83% diversion rate, underscoring its focus on a “circular economy” model that prioritizes reuse and recycling. Officials say the effort reflects both environmental responsibility and community engagement through donations and shopping habits.

To put the impact into perspective, Goodwill says the total material diverted is roughly equal to the weight of 300 city buses. The group also repurposed about 80,000 pounds of electronics through its Dell Reconnect partnership, keeping potentially hazardous materials out of local landfills.

Clothing reuse also played a significant role. By helping circulate an estimated 1.7 million garments, the organization says it conserved enough water to fill approximately 2,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

In addition to donation efforts, Goodwill introduced new pricing strategies to encourage reuse, including discounted rates on glass and household goods at its outlet store. One initiative alone diverted an additional 40,000 pounds of material in a matter of weeks.

Leaders say the organization’s environmental mission is closely tied to its broader community impact, as donations also support job training and other services.

Looking ahead, Land of Lincoln Goodwill plans to expand its footprint with a second outlet store in Champaign, aimed at increasing landfill diversion and access to affordable goods.
