URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Thanks to funding passed by the Illinois General Assembly, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has awarded over $1.6 million to support the Florida Avenue Shared-Use Path Project in Urbana. The announcement was shared by State Representative Carol Ammons, who has long advocated for improved transportation infrastructure across the region.
The new funding will help close a gap in Urbana’s pedestrian and bicycle network, creating a 4-mile continuous bikeway stretching through Urbana into Champaign. The project aims to improve accessibility, safety, and sustainable transit options for residents, students, and visitors.
“After years of city and university-level engagement that demonstrated the community need for this project, I’m glad we could step in as a state to support this work,” Ammons said in a social media post. “This project will significantly enhance mobility for our communities.”
Representative Ammons also extended her gratitude to the City of Urbana, the University of Illinois, and IDOT for their collaboration on the project.
