Fire breaks out in Champaign apartment building; one hospitalized

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Fire crews responded to a blaze at a 16-unit multi-family apartment building in the 2000 block of Cynthia Drive on Monday afternoon, October 6, at approximately 3:54 p.m.

Firefighters arrived on scene after receiving reports of smoke coming from a utility room in the two-story complex. Upon arrival, crews found smoke present in multiple apartments and began searching for the source.

The fire was quickly located burning inside the walls between apartment units. A second alarm was issued as firefighters deployed multiple hose lines to battle the hidden fire. Crews were able to extinguish the fire before it could spread further.

One occupant was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. No firefighter injuries were reported.
