CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — A longtime family-owned business in Champaign is continuing its tradition of personalized service and quality sleep products while inviting customers to take advantage of its upcoming Memorial Day sale.

Illini Mattress Company, Inc. was founded in 1990 by Ed Stout, a Champaign native who still works in the store daily. More than three decades later, the business remains family-operated, with three generations actively involved, including Ed’s daughter, Kristin Blackwell, his son, and two grandsons.

The store carries products from leading manufacturers such as Tempur-Pedic, Sealy and Spring Air, along with adjustable bases, pillows, sheets, and other sleep accessories.

“Shopping local means investing back into the community you live in,” said Blackwell. “When customers choose a family-owned business like ours, they’re supporting local jobs, local families and a level of personal service that you just can’t get from a big-box retailer.”

Blackwell said the company’s mission goes beyond simply selling mattresses.

“Most companies sell mattresses — we specialize in promoting healthy sleep,” she said. “Sleep affects every part of your health and quality of life, so we focus on helping customers find real solutions that improve how they feel every day.”

In addition to product selection, the business emphasizes customer service before and after the sale. Staff members work closely with customers to match them with the right mattress based on comfort, size, features, and budget, and remain available for support long after the purchase.

“We really take the time to listen to what customers need,” said Blackwell. “A mattress is an important investment, and it’s not something most people should buy online without trying it first. Everyone sleeps differently, and being able to test products in person and talk with knowledgeable staff makes a huge difference.”

Blackwell said the company has seen significant changes in the industry over the decades, particularly in mattress technology and design.

“There have been so many advancements in materials, support systems, cooling technology, and adjustable features over the years,” she said. “Because we’ve been in the industry for so long, we have a tremendous amount of product knowledge that helps us guide customers toward the best fit for their needs.”

She added that the COVID-19 pandemic reinforced the importance of supporting local businesses and maintaining personal connections within the community.

“During COVID, our community lost a lot of small businesses, and so much shopping shifted online,” Blackwell said. “We’re grateful that people still see the value of coming into a showroom, asking questions, and working with people who genuinely care about helping them sleep better.”

Delivery is also a key part of the experience. The company offers exact, timed delivery appointments with in-home setup and flexible scheduling, allowing customers to avoid long wait windows. Crews handle setup, remove old mattresses when needed and donate gently used items to local charities whenever possible.

Blackwell said the company’s longevity is rooted in its commitment to relationships and consistency.

“We’ve been fortunate to serve generations of families throughout Champaign-Urbana and the surrounding communities,” she said. “Being part of this community for more than three decades means a lot to us, and we’re grateful for the trust customers continue to place in our family business. We love this industry, and we love helping people find solutions. There’s nothing better than hearing from a customer who says they’re finally sleeping comfortably again.”

As part of its ongoing commitment to the community, the store continues to focus on convenience, reliability, and creating a hassle-free experience for customers.

Illini Mattress Company will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Memorial Day as part of the special sale event. More information about the business, its products and services can be found at Illini Mattress Company.
