Coroner identifies man fatally stabbed in Rantoul over weekend

RANTOUL, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Authorities have identified the man who died after a stabbing in Rantoul on Saturday night as Livy A. Diaz Mendez, a 31-year-old from Urbana.

The Champaign County Coroner’s Office released the victim’s name on Monday. According to Coroner Laurie Brauer, Diaz Mendez was pronounced dead at Carle Hospital at 11:05 p.m. Saturday. An autopsy has been scheduled, though the exact date has not been released.

The Rantoul Police Department responded to a report of a stabbing near E. Wabash Avenue and Fredrick Street around 10 p.m. Saturday. Diaz Mendez was found with life-threatening injuries and transported to the hospital, where he later died.

As of Monday, no arrests have been made. The incident remains under investigation by Rantoul Police and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Rantoul Police Department at (217) 333-8911.
