SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) — The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking for people who love fishing and the outdoors to help teach others this summer.

IDNR is accepting applications for instructors for its 2026 Urban Fishing Program clinics, which are held in communities across the state. The temporary positions last up to six months and involve leading free fishing clinics for children and adults.

Fishing instructors serve as the program’s on-site leaders, teaching participants basic fishing skills while also sharing information about ecology and conservation.

“There’s no better way to spend the summer than teaching children and adults about the joys of fishing and the importance of conservation,” said Mike McClelland, chief of fisheries for IDNR. “This is a great employment opportunity for people who enjoy the outdoors and sharing their love of fishing with others.”

The seasonal positions may appeal to teachers, retirees, students and others who want to spend time outdoors while helping people learn about fishing.

Instructor positions are available in several counties, including Boone, Champaign, Cook, Jersey, Madison, Macon, McHenry, McLean, Rock Island, Sangamon and St. Clair.

The deadline to apply is approaching. Those interested can learn more about qualifications and submit an application by visiting the IDNR jobs page and searching for “fishing clinic instructor” positions.

The Illinois Urban Fishing Program began in 1985 and is designed to introduce people of all ages to fishing, increase local fishing opportunities and encourage appreciation for the state’s natural resources.
