Champaign police wrap up Labor Day safety campaign with multiple citations and DUIs

CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — From August 15 to September 2, the Champaign Police Department, in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police, and over 200 local law enforcement agencies, conducted a robust Labor Day traffic enforcement campaign aimed at reducing impaired and unsafe driving behaviors.

During the 46 hours of targeted patrols—particularly on key arterial routes impacting residential neighborhoods—officers issued:

  • 2 arrests for Driving Under the Influence

  • 31 speeding citations

  • 7 citations for operating without insurance

  • 5 citations for driving without a valid license

  • 1 citation for distracted driving

  • 12 moving violation citations, including for expired registration.

This enforcement effort was funded by federal traffic safety dollars administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
