Champaign Police investigating shooting on Mattis that resulted in Parkland lockdown

CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — Champaign Police were dispatched to the 1500 block of Mattis Avenue at 11:26 a.m. on Wednesday following reports of a shooting with injuries.

At the location, officers found a 15-year-old victim with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Officers administered medical assistance with help from the Champaign Fire Department until the victim could be transported to an area hospital. The victim remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Soon after, a scene with evidence of gunfire was located near the intersection of Winston Drive and Summit Ridge Road.

Initial investigation indicated that the victim was walking in the area when an unknown subject or subjects opened fire and injured him. The victim fled on foot while calling for help, and the subjects fled the area before officers arrived. The reason for the gunfire remains unknown at the time, but investigators are pursuing every lead and seeking assistance from the community to determine what led to the incident and who is responsible.

Officers are continuing to canvass the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may be of investigative assistance. Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department. No arrests have been made at the time and the investigation is ongoing.
