CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Champaign Police were dispatched to the intersection of Neil Street and Marketview Drive yesterday at 9:53 p.m. ( August 11) following a report of a traffic crash. On the scene, officers learned that a vehicle had struck a pedestrian riding a kick scooter in the roadway, and the pedestrian was seriously injured. Officers rendered medical aid to the pedestrian – later confirmed to be a 24-year-old woman from Champaign – until she could be transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. At the hospital, the woman tragically succumbed to her injuries a short time later.
The initial investigation indicates that the pedestrian was traveling eastbound on Marketview Drive and crossed Neil Street while the light was red. She was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound. Champaign Police were in the area for several hours processing physical evidence related to the crash and conducting interviews of potential witnesses. Additionally, the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, and an interview was conducted.
Officers continue to canvass the surrounding area for video footage that may be of investigative assistance. Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems that may have captured the crash is encouraged to notify the police department. No citations have been issued at this time, and the investigation is ongoing. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
