Champaign man killed in motorcycle crash on Cunningham Avenue

URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) — A 35-year-old Champaign man has died following a motorcycle crash involving a semi-truck Wednesday evening in Urbana.

The Champaign County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Hector Santiago-Cardona, who was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital at 7:57 p.m., about 35 minutes after the crash occurred in the 2200 block of Cunningham Avenue, near the eastbound I-74 on-ramp.

According to Urbana Police, the driver of a semi-truck was making a left turn when he failed to yield to oncoming northbound traffic. The truck struck two motorcycles. Santiago-Cardona sustained fatal injuries; the other rider was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital.

The truck driver received a citation for failure to yield to oncoming traffic.

The Urbana Police Department, Illinois State Police Accident Reconstruction Team, and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office are continuing to investigate. An autopsy is scheduled.
