CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — As the University of Illinois advances to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament, Champaign Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen has issued an Emergency Order to enhance public safety during celebratory events this weekend.

The order, aimed at reducing the risk of injuries or property damage, places several restrictions on alcohol sales in the area around campus. Licensed businesses must serve drinks in plastic, paper, or aluminum containers, and sales of packaged liquor and cocktails-to-go will be limited during a set period after the game begins. Alcohol deliveries via services like DoorDash and Instacart will also be restricted, and establishments may not sell more than one keg per customer.

“These steps are being taken to reduce public safety hazards before and after the game,” Mayor Feinen said. “I expect everyone to celebrate responsibly and safely while cheering on the Illini.”

Local law enforcement will increase their presence in Campustown to enforce the order and monitor festivities. The restrictions aim to prevent dangerous situations, including injuries from thrown glass and large private parties fueled by binge drinking.

Mayor Feinen, who serves as the City’s Liquor Commissioner, acknowledged the inconvenience but emphasized the importance of safety: “I am delighted to watch the team’s success, and I wish them the best as they advance through the tournament. Go Illini!”
