Champaign County Sheriff warns of phone scam targeting residents

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to stay alert after reports of fraudulent phone calls from scammers posing as members of the department’s Civil Division.

Sheriff Dustin Heuerman said callers are claiming there is an urgent legal matter requiring immediate payment or action. He emphasized that the sheriff’s office will never ask for money, credit card information, or threaten arrest over the phone.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call is urged to hang up immediately and report it to the Sheriff’s Office at 217-333-8911. Heuerman encouraged residents to share the warning, especially with those who may be more vulnerable to scams.
