CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office issued 10 citations and three written warnings during the Illinois Department of Transportation’s “Click It or Ticket” enforcement campaign over Memorial Day weekend.

Deputies conducted 12 hours of focused traffic enforcement patrols as part of the statewide campaign aimed at improving roadway safety and increasing seat belt compliance. During the operation, deputies made 13 traffic stops.

According to the sheriff’s office, enforcement activity resulted in five citations for seat belt violations. Additional citations included one for driving while license suspended, one for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, one for no valid driver’s license and two for other miscellaneous traffic offenses. Deputies also issued three written warnings for miscellaneous traffic violations.

Sheriff Dustin Heuerman said the campaign reinforces the importance of seat belt use in preventing serious injuries and fatalities in traffic crashes.

“Many fatalities from traffic crashes can be prevented with proper seat belt use,” the sheriff’s office said in a release. “This campaign reflects our commitment to roadway safety and reinforces the message that buckling up saves lives.”

The “Click It or Ticket” campaign is funded through federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. More information about safe driving practices is available at ItsNotaGameIllinois.com.
