CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The City of Champaign has activated its sidewalk snow and ice removal ordinance in the Downtown, Midtown and Campustown areas following Saturday’s snowfall. The declaration was issued by the Public Works Director on Sunday, Jan. 25, after records showed the city received at least two inches of snow.

Under city ordinance, property owners in the affected areas are required to clear sidewalks within 24 hours of the declaration to improve pedestrian safety. The compliance period began at 11:45 a.m. Sunday, meaning sidewalks must be cleared by 11:45 a.m. Monday.

Sidewalks must maintain a clear path equal to the width of the sidewalk or 48 inches, whichever is less. Properties located at corners are also required to clear curb ramps to ensure accessible passage from block to block. Sidewalks that are not brought into compliance may be cleared by the city at the property owner’s expense.

City officials also reminded residents and businesses not to place shoveled snow into city streets, where it can create hazardous conditions for vehicles. While the ordinance applies specifically to designated areas, the city is encouraging all residents and businesses to clear sidewalks, particularly along identified Safe Routes to School, to support safer and more accessible travel.

Maps of the affected areas and details about the sidewalk snow removal ordinance are available on the city’s website at champaignil.gov/snow.
