URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) — Carle Foundation Hospital is asking the community to partner in care as its Emergency Department experiences sustained high patient volumes during a peak in respiratory and influenza-like illnesses.

Hospital officials said demand for services remains at record highs across the Champaign-Urbana area, placing continued strain on capacity despite recent expansion efforts.

“We’re here, we’re ready and community partnership really matters right now,” said Jaymie Green, chief nursing officer at Carle Foundation Hospital. “Our teams are providing exceptional service every day and how our community chooses to access care can help us ensure more timely, high-quality care for everyone who needs it.”

Leaders are encouraging residents to consider alternatives to the Emergency Department for non-life-threatening conditions. Many concerns can be treated through urgent care clinics, same-day appointments, virtual visits or by calling for clinical guidance.

Carle Health has expanded its Emergency Department in two phases over the past year and increased access to urgent care and virtual services. However, officials say patient demand continues to exceed typical seasonal trends.

“Our Emergency Department and hospital teams continue to demonstrate remarkable dedication for our communities,” said Holly Cook, Emergency Department director. “We are deeply grateful to our team members who are picking up shifts, coming in early and staying late to make sure patients receive the care they need.”

Operational teams are also maximizing available bed space and implementing additional measures to manage patient flow safely and efficiently.

Community members seeking guidance can visit Carle’s online care resource page or call 217-326-CARE to speak with trained staff who can help determine the most appropriate care option.
