CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill (Chambana Today) – The Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana, known as BACH, is inviting singers high school age and older who read music to audition for their upcoming concert season. Auditions will be held on Monday, August 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, located at 2200 Philo Road, Urbana.
During the auditions, singers will be asked to perform scales, sightread, and sing a short piece of their choice without accompaniment. Soloist auditions will be scheduled separately. Those interested can sign up online for both choir and soloist auditions at baroqueartists.org.
BACH’s new season begins on November 16 with “Back-to-Back Bach,” commemorating the 275th anniversary of J.S. Bach’s death with performances of his Magnificat and Gloria Cantata. On March 8, the group will present “Winter Comfort,” featuring an hour of reflective music spanning several periods. The season will conclude on May 31 with “As the Deer Longs,” focusing on the text of Psalm 42.
With over 40 members, BACH is a vibrant mix of experienced amateurs and professional musicians, including students and retirees. Rehearsals take place for two hours on Monday evenings, typically about 10 rehearsals per concert.
“Singing with BACH is more than just a rewarding musical experience,” said BACH Music Director Sarah Riskind. “It’s also a friendly community, and a chance to refresh and focus on creating something beautiful for a few hours each week.”
Founded in 1996, the non-profit specializes in Baroque music but performs works from all periods, striving for musical excellence and modern relevance. Sarah Riskind is in her fifth year as music director.
