CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — A Champaign man has been arrested for his alleged role in a November 2025 shooting that seriously injured a Champaign resident.

On Nov. 17, 2025, at approximately 2:35 a.m., Champaign police responded to the 700 block of North Elm Street following reports of a shooting. Officers arrived to find a resident suffering from multiple potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds. Police and medical personnel immediately rendered aid before the victim was transported to a local hospital. The woman continues to recover from her injuries.

Investigators said the resident was answering a late-night knock at her door when 31-year-old James E. Brown allegedly opened fire, striking her multiple times. Brown fled the scene before officers arrived.

Brown was arrested in Champaign on May 14 during the execution of a search warrant connected to the investigation. He faces charges including attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing despite the arrest. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Champaign Police at 217-351-4545. Arrangements can be made to share information privately.
