Arrest made in April 28 shooting incident in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — A 16-year-old male has been arrested in connection with a shooting incident that occurred on the evening of April 28, 2026, in Champaign, Illinois. The shooting, which left one person injured, took place in the 100 block of North Mattis Avenue at around 6:55 p.m.

Upon arriving at the scene, Champaign Police officers learned that an 18-year-old male had been struck by gunfire, sustaining a non-life-threatening wound. Officers found the victim a few blocks away from the scene, in the 700 block of Country Fair Drive, where they immediately administered emergency medical aid, assisted by the Champaign Fire Department. The victim was then transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

The initial investigation suggests that the victim was in a parking lot when the 16-year-old suspect opened fire, striking him before fleeing the scene. The juvenile was arrested on April 30 in Champaign and now faces charges of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm. Due to his status as a minor, state law prohibits the release of further identifying information regarding the suspect.

Ongoing Investigation
Despite the arrest, Champaign Police have stated that the investigation remains ongoing. Officers continue to canvass the area for witnesses and surveillance footage that could provide further insight into the incident. Law enforcement is encouraging local residents and businesses with exterior surveillance cameras to contact the police department to assist with the investigation.
