Maize opens downtown Champaign location

The wait for, what some say are the best tacos around, in downtown Champaign is over.

The long awaited “station” location for Maize Mexican Grill is open as of this morning in the old Illinois Central train depot at 116 N. Chestnut.

The move was announced all the way back in 2013, but that announcement was premature as it took until a Cinco de Mayo pop up last week.

In an article with Smile Politely owner Armando Sandoval said that this move is, in part, due to the ongoing MCORE project on Green St.

“I want to give everyone the best service that I have, considering the situation we’re in. I want to be able to do a grand opening later on in the summer. When the little one is settled, and the big one is settled, a grand opening with new dishes and more drinks. I just want everyone to be relaxed and be able to enjoy what they already like, but have it with some Coronas and margs. I’m trying to make lemonade with lemons. [laughs]”

As a result, the Campustown location will close for an undetermined period of time.
