IDOT: I-74 Speed Limit in Champaign-Urbana to be Lowered

In a release this afternoon, the Illinois Departement of Transportation says that it’s permanently lowering the speed limit on I-74 in Champaign-Urbana.

The speed limit will drop from the standard 70 MPH to 60 MPH starting Friday.

The change was in response to a recent study that showed that the current speeds, crash information, and number of interchanges necessitated the change. Officials say the change will give drivers more time to react.

The limit will be lowered from West of 1-57 to East of the Cunningham Ave. interchange. The study also found that the current speed limit of 70 MPH on I-57 is acceptable.
