Fighting Illini Hall of Fame’s First Class Announced


The University of Illinois Athletic department has named 28 Members of the inaugural class of the Fighting Illini Hall of Fame.

The class includes:

  • Dick Butkus, Football (1962-64)
  • Jerry Colangelo, Basketball/Contributor to Sport (1960-62)
  • Deron Williams, Basketball (2003-05)
  • Dwight “Dike” Eddleman, Football/Track/Basketball (1943, 1947-49)
  • Harold “Red” Grange, Football (1923-25)
  • George Halas, Football/Basketball/Baseball/Contributor to Sport (1916-18)
  • George Huff, Football/Baseball Coach/Athletics Director (1901-36)
  • Mannie Jackson, Basketball/Contributor to Sport (1958-60)
  • Steve Stricker, Golf (1986-89)
  • Robert Zuppke, Football Coach (1913-41)
  • Claude “Buddy” Young, Football/Track & Field (1944, 46)
  • Craig Virgin, Cross Country (1973-77)

The class will be introduced at the  Fighting Illini Athletics Hall of Fame Gala at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. The gala will be held on Friday June 23rd.

The induction will take place Saturday September 30th at State Farm Center in Champaign.
