Temperatures are expected to soar over the weekend, with heat indices expected to surpass 110 degrees. The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Friday and Saturday.

Here’s the release from the NWS in Lincoln:

...EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM CDT
SATURDAY...

* TEMPERATURE...High temperatures will climb into the lower to
middle 90s over the next couple of days.

* HEAT INDEX VALUES...Heat index values will peak at around 110
degrees both this afternoon and Saturday afternoon.

* IMPACTS...Heat illnesses may occur rapidly with prolonged
  exposure and overexertion.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

An Excessive Heat Warning means that a prolonged period of
intense heat will occur. The combination of hot temperatures and
high humidity will create a DANGEROUS SITUATION in which heat
illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-
conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives
and neighbors.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing and drink
plenty of water.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in
vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during
warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal
temperatures in a matter of minutes.
