The man alleged to have kidnapped missing University of Illinois scholar Yingying Zhang, was denied bail at a court hearing Wednesday afternoon.
The federal judge in the case denied bond until the trial because he believed that Brendt Christensen, 28, of Champaign, was a flight risk, and a danger to the community.
The News-Gazette’s Julie Wurth reports that Christensen was captured on audio recording at the vigil for Zhang, laying out plans for other potential victims:
— While under surveillance during a Thursday vigil for Ms. Zhang outside Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, Christensen allegedly explained the “characteristics of an ideal victim.”
— He was allegedly captured on an audio recording picking out other potential victims at that same public vigil.
— There also exists audio of Christensen describing how Ms. Zhang fought and resisted when he brought her back to his Champaign apartment.
— He made a threat to the safety of another person to whom he provided incriminating information.
He will return to court on July 14th for a preliminary hearing.
Christensen was arrested last Friday on kidnapping charges in Zhang’s disappearance after he was identified as a suspect. He was under police surveillance for a number of days until he was captured on audio surveillance talking about kidnapping Zhang.
Police have yet to locate Zhang, whom they presume to be deceased.
