Well, Saturday was a bit chilly and drizzled occasionally (at least while I was there), but Opening Weekend of the Urbana Market at the Square was a great success! If you’d never been and you were surprised by all the open spaces, keep in mind that not all vendors/producers are on site yet. Due to heavy rains, some farmers haven’t even gotten their crops in the ground. But word is that it’ll be a banner year for fruits…and there are PLENTY of things to see/do/eat/buy this early in the season. Rest assured that before you know it, the parking lot on the corner of Illinois and Vine will be PACKED with booths (and happy customers!).
I was happy to see so many patrons milling around Saturday morning when I arrived at 9 – sadly but not surprisingly WAAAAAY too late to find this week’s biggest item, ASPARAGUS. The Market at the Square certainly rewards early risers (open at 7), and what is available now is quickly gone. No worries, though! Meat, goat cheese, honey, eggs, pasta, plants, and herbs were plentiful.
The Market at the Square is filled with wonderful arts and crafts, artist on hand to chat with a customer and answer questions.
Kids were having a blast with Sprouts at the Market from 9-11:30, and there was a nice mix of entertainment on practically every corner.
The Urbana Market at the Square is a tremendous event for the whole family, every Saturday rain or shine from 7-12. Parking is free, food trucks offer up fantastic breakfast choices, and among the thousands of visitors and local growers you’re bound to see neighbors and friends.
